Press Statement on the Election of Mrs. Fatou Bomm Bensouda as Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court

Following the election by acclamation of Mrs. Fatou Bomm BENSOUDA as the new Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Monday 12th December 2011, during the Tenth Assembly of States Parties of the Rome Statute establishing the ICC, currently being held in New York from the 12th to the 21st December 2011, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad hereby wishes to register its sincere gratitude and appreciation to all those who in one way or the other

contributed to the successful election of Mrs. Bensouda

Special thanks and gratitude go to His Excellency the President, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh, who endorsed Mrs. Bensouda as The Gambia’s candidate for the position, which enabled the entire state machinery to be deployed in pursuit of a successful campaign.  Further, His Excellency the President personally wrote to all 119 Heads of State and Government whose countries are States Parties to the Rome Statute, thus ensuring high level support.  His Excellency the President also continued to provide his personal guidance and support during the entire process.

The Government of the Gambia is also grateful to the African Union who endorsed Mrs. Bensouda as the sole African candidate for the position of ICC Prosecutor, during its 17th Ordinary Heads of State Summit in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, in June this year.

The Government of The Gambia also expresses its sincere gratitude to all 74 States Parties who co-sponsored Mrs. Bensouda’s candidature at the 10th Assembly of States Parties, thus ensuring her unanimous election by consensus.  Special thanks and appreciation are also extended to all civil society and non-government organisations that played a crucial role in ensuring Mrs Bensouda’s election.

The Government of The Gambia would also like to highlight the critical role played by its Permanent Missions to the United Nations, the African Union, and the European Union, under the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, International cooperation, and Gambians Abroad.

The Government of The Gambia thanks all those who contributed in one way or the other to the successful election of Mrs. Bensouda, either by offering advice, prayers, encouragement and best wishes.

The Government of The Gambia also congratulates Mrs. Bensouda on this historic achievement, wishes her the very best, and assures her its continued support towards a successful tenure of office.

On behalf of His Excellency the President, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya A. J. J. Jammeh, the Honourable Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad hosted a dinner in New York in honour of all those who supported the candidature and election of Mrs. Fatou Bomm Bensouda.
